In English the expression ‘to break the ice’ means to initiate social interaction, often through humour or friendly overtures.

For the Barents Spektakel 2013 festival,  Norwegian artist Kjetil Berge drove an ice cream van from London to Kirkenes via Murmansk. This involved a huge diversion across Eastern Europe and up through the remote Northern regions of Russia. Along the way he exchanged ice creams for a chat about the weather with the people he met. As it unfolded the journey became a narrative, combining elements of travelogue, road movie and odyssey, presented on this site and in and around the van during the festival.
